Luckily, I had some great mentors who shared their experience, techniques and strategies with me and since then Ive trained new engineers with those same methods plus the new ones Ive figured out for myself since.
Mastering Compressor Settings Series Of PostsThats because there simply isnt enough space in a blog post or even, a series of posts.
This is exactly the kind of control a mastering engineer needs to subtly enhance or radically re-shape a mix. I just dont think they reflect the way real mastering engineers use them not me, anyway. For me its all about getting the EQ and balance right going in. Mastering Compressor Settings Professional Mastering EngineerMy name is Ian Shepherd - Ive worked as a professional mastering engineer for over 20 years and I run the Production Advice website with over 50,000 readers each month Read more. I have one each that I prefer depending on the sound I want, one hardware opto, and one plugin 2 buss comp. What kind of hardwareplugins do you use What are your preferred settings, and for what genre. I always hated hearing my mixes through bus compression -- until I used the A-Designs Nail compressor, which was beautiful with about 3-5 db of reduction going to glue things together. I had done some of the same material thru the SSL G Series rack compressor, where 3-5db of reduction sounded like this Morgan. What I like to aim for is around 2-4db of gain reduction on my 2500. I find that this is when the box really starts to glue things together and creates an added depth to things. I like to get some balances first, then start hitting the comp and then work the mix into the comp and work the comp around the mix.and so on a so forth. A great pro once told me that he found himself working in circles while mixing (in a good way). Sometimes with buss compression you might take it a little too far.choking the mix too much, so you might back off the comp, or back off whatever is triggering the comp. I really could sit here and just type up endless scenarios of how one MIGHT use it. Best thing is to NOT slam it too hard and start your mix going into it.if you are gunna do it. Kyle D. I mix into a smart C1.4:1 usually 30ms attk.release depends.only 1 or 2 db GR. Once in about every 6 months or so Ill use the Sonoris Multiband comp as well - but if I do it probably meant I asked for a remix and couldnt get one. Mastering Compressor Settings How To Use ItI often suggest that my clients not compress the 2 buss, unless I know theyve got a decent box, and i know they know how to use it. In this case, I suggest that my clients leave the mix buss clean. What i do is play their mix through my Lavry converter, into my custom Inward Connections mix buss, then if i want the SSL character Ill run into the 7720 taking off maybe 3db attack 3 or 10 ms release Auto, sometimes Ill use the built in hi pass as well. From there I hit the half inch at 15 or 30 ips depending upon the song. What I do is run an AUX to an EQ and Compressor, then mix that back into the busmains. With a heavier slam setting on the compression and a nice midrange EQ, all thats needed is like -50 to -40 db back into the mix to get the sound gel I like. ![]() Of course it really depends on the song and on the used comp. However usually I finish to have the attack quite open, low ratio and release that follows the tempo.
